The Black Caucus Alliance is an independent nonprofit organization that aims to address systemic barriers in city policy through the lens of collaboration and codesign. The Caucus began as a working group advising Mississauga Mayor Crombie on how to make the city more equitable, especially for its Black communities. The Caucus launched an initiative to engage the wider community by hosting 6 community consultation sessions focued on:
- Accessing Political Power
- Accessing Mississauga’s Resources
- Policing
- Well-being: Designing Healthy Black Communities
- Accessing an Age Friendly Society
- Back Economic Empowerment
Hundreds of participants offered their time and insights to the public consultation phase of the process. The community consultation sessions were then followed by co-design sessions with community members who participated in the previous sessions. Also participating were subject matter experts and operational stakeholders who all worked together to design solutions, policies and action plans to realize the communities’ hopes, and address their concerns.
